Cocoa Wah Wah – The dinner before the show

I was lucky enough to be given tickets to Rob van Vuuren’s What What at the Baxter not too long ago. That was great but this post is about something else – the food we had before the show, which was also great – and cheap (enough) – at Main Road’s Cocoa Wah Wah, in Rondebosch…

I had popped in at this café-style, sidewalk restaurant before but only to grab a coffee and a muffin – yonks ago, shortly after they opened up. That being said, I had no idea they were more than a simple coffee shop, until now. But don’t be fooled – they still serve a mean coffee or hot chocolate…

One of the things I did remember to take a pic of - this decadent hot chocolate... Yum!

As the show kicked off fairly early, we just needed a place where we could grab a quick bite – I hadn’t even planned that we would be having a sit-down meal. However, when we got there, we were seated and upon checking out the specials I just had to have a pasta. I hadn’t had the Italian delicacy in an age, so it was a must. Best of all – any pasta costs you just R45 on a Friday or Saturday after 7pm.

Considering the pasta I had was in the R70-odd range, I felt chuffed by making a “saving” – crazy how that really does help sell something. The food, I must add, was frikkin delish – a chicken and prawn pasta with chorizo-tomato dressing on penne. To die for.

The decor and the hanging plants and just the general buzzy vibe on a Friday night – coupled with a little chocolate or butterscotch vodka cocktail – was just what we needed before the show and Cocoa Wah Wah comes with my Baywatch Bergemann stamp of approval…

I didn’t know that Cocoa Wah Wah was actually part of a chain of ‘Cocoa’ stores, each with their own fascinating name. Now that I do, I plan to follow up on these. Here’s the website

Admittedly, not the greatest of pics, but the inside of the restaurant is a fun, playful-looking space.
