1322 Backpackers International – Break the hustle in Blue Bull town…

It’s not often that we (read I) travel up north to good old Gautengaleng but when I do I usually stay with family or mates, depending on the occasion. This time however, I made 1322 Backpackers, nestled into probably the greenest strip of earth one is likely to find in Gauteng, my home for the three-day stint that I was up there…

I really don’t like fueling the North-South divide but I’ve always found GP to be overly dry and, at times, dirty. So, for this exact reason, this trip surprised me, as I found myself snuggly wound into shady Hatfield, which was more to my liking than I had imagined. As the friendly owners, Dries and Izelle, will show you, 1322 is close enough to the hustle and bustle but far enough to be tranquil and relaxing… The water features positioned throughout the garden and lapa areas help build this effect rather nicely as well, as the sounds of traffic get lulled out into the distance, with you chilling next to the crackling fire in a comfy wicker chair…

Because we only had a limited amount of time in Pretoria and a pretty packed schedule, there was a lot (which we mainly discovered too late!) that we didn’t get around to, but if I get to shoot up again anytime soon I definitely want to pop around the Nan Hua Buddhist Temple, the third largest buddhist temple in the world… Next time for sure…

Flags from around the world adorn the lapa area, signed by those that left them, as well as sporting attire from teams that passed through the backpackers...

So, what is the backpackers close to? Shops and clubs, definitely, a Virgin Active for those so inclined and it’s only a short hop, skip and jump to the Gautrain, which is a treat for us Capies who only have the MyCiti to brag about (heh…) and if you want to go exploring all you need to do is ask and you’ll be pointed in the right direction.

Free brekkie, coffee and tea is always on the cards, an amazing lapa area with garden tables, awesome braai facilities, a pool, a stack of foreigners to shoot the sh*t with, games to play and a bar that stocks as much as any good bar could. A treat was watching the Blue Bulls come ever so close to losing with Dries shouting at the telly the whole while as we chatted about a little bit of everything – always fun to share your stories…

On the whole, I’ve stayed at a bunch of backpackers all over the country and I can tell you that 1322 Backpackers International will not disappoint! Prices are, as expected, subject to change. There’s an online booking portal on their site, or just give them a call to check availability and pricing 🙂
