Yzerfontein is a typical West Coast town and offers a great deal considering that it’s almost a stones throw away from Cape Town. It’s the perfect getaway if you want to sneak away for a night or don’t feel like driving for endless km’s.
You don’t really have any option over different campsites in Yzerfontein, but that’s ok because the one they do have is really good. Yzerfontein itself offers a beautiful untouched coastline, a harbour for launching your boat or just checking out the catch of the day, decent shops for supplies and most of what you will need for a weekend away.
What I really love about Yzerfontein is the beach and if you venture around the corner from the main beach you reach a brilliant surfing wave and endless kilometers of seaside bliss. Along this beach you also get some of the most beautiful holiday houses around.
The campsite is adjacent to the beach and you can access it on paths from the campsite to the beach. I usually choose a site that’s a few sites away from the paths so that you are close enough to the paths but also far enough away that you have some privacy.
The actual campsite itself is one of the best kept campsites around and there are many spots to choose from. What I really like about the campsite is that it has a substantial amount of shade and the tree’s between the sites offer some privacy. The ablutions are kept in a good condition and the showers are great compared to many other campsites I’ve been to.
The only negative I have for this campsite is that the price is rather hefty. If you are camping with just 2 people its almost not worth it. I would highly suggest taking a few friends along to share the expense of the site and if you can’t, don’t scrap the idea of Yzerfontein altogether as it’s still a great camping destination.
While in Yzerfontein I would suggest the following:
- Go to !khwa ttu San cultural center which is a few km’s outside Yzerfontein, on the R27. 022 492 2998
- Check out the animals at the West Coast farm stall. 022 451 2851
- Have breakfast or lunch at the Beaches restaurant overlooking the sea and the well-known 16 Mile beach. 022 451 2200
- Spend a day at the West Coast National Park. In Spring the flowers here offer an amazing spectacle. 022 772 2144/5.
Besides “things to do”, the essence of Yzerfontein is the relaxing vibe that it has. I have been here many times and not done anything other than just relax, go for walks on the beach, read and explore the area.
