I was inspired to write this after reading an article by Cape Town Alive on how to keep your girlfriend and play Diablo III. As we all know this time of the year becomes a sport watchers dream (or nightmare if you support a team like the lions ) and our significant others are usually not as impressed by watching the tour de France for 10 days straight, pulling all-dayers watching Super Rugby or spending days watching all the different Olympic sports as we are.
Here are just the major sporting events to grace us over the next 8 weeks!
Junior Rugby World Cup
The Proteas vs England in 3 tests, 5 ODI’s and 3 T20′s
Tour de France
Ok, lets get the real meat of this post, the strategies to end all strategies!
1. Take her to a game.
One of the best tips here is to actually take her to a game, this is almost guarenteed to work as she gets caught up in the vibe and the excitement of the match. Before you know it she’ll be enjoying the games, even of TV(ok, maybe not TV).
2. Buy her some supporters gear
Every girl loves clothes, so get her something that looks nice and makes her feel a sense of patriotism towards your team. This can be a game-changer!
3. Be willing to compromise
Before you think to yourself “NO WAY!” just think about this one for a bit. Do you really need to watch all 5 days of that test against England? Will you survive if you watch the Tour de France highlights on Supersport Blitz? Is watching New Zealand vs Argentina really a priority? If they are a priority then by all means go ahead and watch them but if not I’m sure there are a few things you can skip on just catch the highlights. This is not all doom and gloom and it is something that will help for sure. If you refuse to compromise I suggest skipping to step #10
4. Give her some attention
I know, just as much as you, how tempting it is to watch the half-time analysis or spend hours watching match build-up,if you take just a bit of this time and have quick chat or give her a hug or kiss then it won’t feel like you are fully-consumed by the sports game (even though you are).
5. Get dual-view DSTV
There is nothing worse than having to be forced to watch something if you don’t want to. So rather let her watch “Say yes to the Dress” or whatever girls watch in the other room.
6. Buy her a PC game or a movie series
The Sims or a season or two of her favourite series will keep her entertained for hours on end and will result in a win-win situation.
7. Make sure that there is something in it for her!
As much as it grills us men, our girlfriends all have their favourite sports stars for very different reasons then us. Be it Dan Carter, Richie McCaw (I don’t know why) or Ronaldo, make sure there are alternative reasons to enjoy the game.
8. Include some of her favourite snacks
Instead of just Biltong, booze and chips buy some of her favourite chocolate. They say they are a girls best friend for a reason.
9. Don’t get too worked up over the game
I know if your team loses it is really upsetting, but try relax and do something to get your mind off it. You will definitely be upset, but rather go for a gym/jog or go out for dinner than siting at home feeling sorry for yourself
10. Go big or go home!
If all hope is lost and you are not able to watch any of your beloved sports, then drastic measures need to be taken. I would suggest you sell all your possesions, move to Australia, buy a kangaroo and start a sports betting business. If this doesn’t take off, you can always deal in sports tickets at the gate.
With these tips in mind you are guarenteed success in your sports supporting career. You might have to fork out a bit of money here or there but in the end it will be so worth it, enjoy!
