Seal Island – Hout Bay

Seal Island aka Duiker Island in Hout Bay should be on everyone’s to-do list if you have not been there before. It is very accessible on your own boat or on one of the many charter boats in Hout Bay harbour. It costs about R50 depending on which boat you go on and is definitely worth it. The most popular boat would have to be Nauticat but all of the boats will provide a good trip.

To get there is simple, you just go into Hout Bay harbour and park in the parking lot and you will see many signs & boats ready to depart on the waters edge. If you are going when the wind is blowing you must take along warm jackets or you will absolutely freeze! I would also recommend taking your camera because there are many opportunities to take great pics along the way. The actual trip to seal island isn’t very long but you get to spend some time in the channel next to the island to have a good look at the seals.

If you are on a glass bottomed boat then you will be able to see the seals from below deck too, so make sure you don’t spend all your time above deck because it’s a lot of fun watching them underwater and the seabed is quite interesting.

After the trip you can go to the Bay Harbour market or enjoy some classic fish and chips at Mariners Wharf.

Make sure you get down to Hout Bay this summer, you won’t regret it!
